TEN ECOPORT - Transnational ENhancement of ECOPORT8 network

Long-term objectives:

  • to enhance the cross-border and trans-European partnership between SEE port areas developing collaboration and effective relation among all stakeholders (i.e. Port Authorities, local institutions, local authorities, enterprises, external operators and citizens of the involved countries), in order to stimulate an integrated policy on environmental protection and growth of Trans-European Network (TEN) corridors;
  • to develop and implement intelligent environmental port management and information systems using integrated technologies for environmental risk protection in order to reduce impacts on human health, biodiversity and other environmental aspects.

Specific objectives:

  • improvement of the capacity of Port Authorities for developing and implementing effective policies for environmental management of the port areas, by defining specific critical issues, implementing Specific Action Plan useful for a shared, efficient and sustainable Operational Environmental Plan;
  • promotion of peer discussion among all individuals and institutions involved in port activities, aimed at providing education, training, consulting and reviewing based on the best experiences and lessons learnt by all ports involved;
  • creation of regional/local platforms involving all local stakeholders connected directly or indirectly with the port areas and the cities hosting them, in order to guarantee information about the peculiarities of each area involved and to provide timely solution plans;
  • providing innovative methodologies and instruments for mapping the critical issues for each port involved and highlighting the common key-elements, as the basis of the Common Action Plan aimed at protecting port areas and surrounding ecosystems;
  • providing ICT instruments for updating the EMS systems starting by the assessing of the vulnerabilities and risks;
  • creation of an information base of research methodologies for environmental protection in SEE ports;
  • promotion of the transnational enhancement of a permanent TEN ECOPORT network with a view to develop, strengthen and transfer coordinated initiatives useful for a transnational strategy for port ECO-management in SEE sea basins;
  • establishment of a multidisciplinary Task Force that will gather all knowledge and experience to be gained by the present project, as well as future experience with a view to keeping providing support and services to SEE ports.

Expected Outputs & Results:

  • raise awareness about the environmental and economic advantages of the sustainable management of port networks;
  • improve the creation of highly specialised working group within the Port Authorities with increased capacity on the EMS;
  • develop the methodological process for the peer education and training among ports involved and the key-stakeholders operating within port areas;
  • provide the maps for the specific critical issues and vulnerability risks within ports and hosting cities involved in the project;
  • provide shared and sustainable operative action plan as tool for timely solution of critical issues of the ports involved, implemented by the direct stakeholders (ports and port operators);
  • provide common model for the sustainable development of port networks;
  • provide intelligent environmental port management and information systems and the relative integrated technologies for environmental risk protection;
  • provide additional information useful for implementation of the sustainable model for environmental-friendly development of the port networks;
  • provide feasibility studies for the environmental management of port operators;
  • create permanent discussion platforms in two levels: among ports and between ports and stakeholders operating within port areas;
  • create a transnational task force that will link the local platforms and will serve as a supporting tool for the SEE port network and its enhancement in the future.
